Your questions about direct mail

Maria asks…

direct mail?

I want to start selling by direct mail to suppliment my income, but I’ve run out of ideas as to what to sell. I’ve learnt that I need to sell items that are not readily available in stores to be able to expect some success. Now I don’t know what steps to take to find such items? Also anybody knows which small businesses already sell by direct mail? Any suggestions will be most appreciated. Thanx.

Jon answers:

Just sharing some of my experience. What I normally do is that I will have a few of my interested topics and then find out which one of my topics has the highest market demand. You could easily do that using some internet application such as Wordtracker software.

Actually, there are a lot of online business model (e.g. selling physical / digital products, using paid newsletter or website, buying and selling domain names, affiliate marketing and many more). Some of these models may not necessary need any product. You could consider some of them so that you will not be limited to only direct mail approach.

Steven asks…

Direct Mail?

I have a small business and am looking to obtain a direct mail list, which also includes email addresses. There are quite a few out there on the internet, but I don’t have the time to research all of them to determine if they have what I need and are reputable.

Can anyone suggest a good and reputable direct mail provider/broker that will provide references?

Jon answers:

infoUSA has used them for years

James asks…

How much does cooperative direct mail marketing cost?

I’m curious to know if anyone knows (ballpark) how much it costs to send out a small flyer in a coöperative direct mail marketing envelope such as valpak. Does anyone here have any experience with how much it may cost per thousand flyers or anything like that to give me a general idea of the costs?

Jon answers:

Ethan… get other local companies in on the act… ask them to split the costs… and… because you organised it… you don’t pay a cent!

Joseph asks…

Robert asks…

What person would I direct mail to, if I want to pitch installing an aquarium in a professional facility?

I am sending a direct mailing to my target market, but am pre-calling each prospect to get the name of the person who would most likely make the decision to add an aquarium to their office, lobby or waiting room.. My call will go something like this: I’d like to mail some information to whomever is in charge of (________________) And I was wondering if you can give me their name so I can make sure they receive it? (a best answer should fill in the blank)
*My company leases, sells, installs, and maintains Aquariums in the commercial market. — Or at least it is GOING to!! Thanks in advance.

Jon answers:

If it’s a building that is owned or occupied by just one company, then you would want to contact the “operations manager”.

If it’s a large office building where multiple companies reside, then you would want to contact the “facilities manager”.

Good luck!

Good luck
